Which Kwikset Models This Applies To
Kwikset has two distinct cylinder architectures, and mixing them up is the most common mistake we see in Washington homes. Traditional pin-tumbler cylinders - found on the 660 deadbolt, 400T Tylo, and 780/980 series - use standard bottom pins, top pins, and springs that we rekey with a pinning kit and a new key cut to code. SmartKey cylinders, introduced in 2008 and now standard on the 620, 816, 991, and Halo lines, use a sidebar and wafer system that rekeys without disassembly but requires the working key and a specific reset cradle technique.
Identifying your cylinder takes thirty seconds. Look for a small slot next to the keyway with the Kwikset logo - that’s SmartKey. No slot means traditional pin-tumbler. The backset measurement (2-3/8″ or 2-3/4″) doesn’t affect rekeying, but the cylinder type absolutely does. We carry OEM Kwikset key blanks and factory pinning kits, plus Ilco and JMA aftermarket equivalents that meet the same ANSI/BHMA specs at lower cost. For SmartKey cylinders, we use genuine Kwikset reset tools - aftermarket cradles exist, but we’ve seen too many jam a cylinder in Washington’s older homes where doors have settled and keyways wear slightly out of true.
Signs Your Kwikset Lock Rekeying Is Failing
- Key turns but bolt doesn’t retract. The tailpiece or cam has separated from the cylinder housing, often from forcing a sticky deadbolt in Washington’s humid summer months when wood swells. Rekeying alone won’t fix this - the cylinder needs removal and inspection.
- SmartKey cylinder spins 360 degrees without catching. The sidebar wafers have slipped out of alignment, usually from an incomplete reset attempt or using a worn key as the “old key” during rekeying. We can often recover the cylinder without replacement.
- New key works inconsistently or catches at certain angles. Pin chambers are worn oval instead of round, or SmartKey wafers have developed burrs from grit tracked in on Washington’s gravel driveways and garden paths. This cylinder is nearing end of life.
- Original key works, but rekeyed key doesn’t - or vice versa. On traditional cylinders, a driver pin may be stuck high; on SmartKey, the reset procedure was interrupted. Both are fixable in one visit if caught early.
- Key extraction requires jiggling or the key sticks halfway in. The keyway has worn to match the old key’s pattern. Rekeying to a fresh key cut with sharp, factory-new bitting often restores function without replacing the cylinder.

Can a Kwikset lock be repaired instead of rekeyed?
Rekeying and repair solve different problems. Rekeying changes which key operates the lock; repair fixes mechanical failure. If your cylinder turns smoothly and the bolt extends fully, rekeying is all you need. If the mechanism binds, grinds, or slips, the cylinder needs repair or replacement before any rekeying makes sense. We diagnose this on arrival and quote both options.

Most single-cylinder jobs take 20 to 30 minutes on site. A full house rekey - four to six cylinders, keyed alike - typically runs 60 to 90 minutes.
