Signs Your Medeco Lock Rekeying Is Failing

• The key sticks or catches at certain depths. This usually means one or more bottom pins has developed a flat spot or burr from metal fatigue. The pin no longer rises smoothly to the shear line, and forcing it will oval the pin chamber over time.
• You feel a “step” or notch when turning the key. The Medeco sidebar rides in a longitudinal groove milled into each pin. When those grooves wear unevenly, the sidebar binds instead of sliding home cleanly. Rekeying replaces the pins and restores the sidebar path.
• The lock worked fine in summer but drags in winter. Washington’s humidity swings, especially near the Potomac or Anacostia, can cause micro-corrosion inside the cylinder. If you’re in Foggy Bottom or along the waterfront, we’ve seen this more often than in drier neighborhoods like Cleveland Park.

There’s no high-tension spring or electrical hazard in a Medeco cylinder, so the physical risk is low. The risk to your lock is another matter. Medeco pins are angled, not flat-bottomed like a Schlage or Kwikset, and they must be loaded in the correct rotational orientation or the sidebar won’t engage. Get one pin backwards and the cylinder won’t turn at all. Get debris in the chamber and you’ll need a full replacement.
