Signs Your Medeco Master Key Systems Is Failing
- Sub-master key works in some locks but not others. This usually points to a worn master pin or a sidebar that has lost its precise alignment in one cylinder. The master pin stack has compressed or shifted, so the shear line no longer clears at every position.
- Change key unexpectedly opens a lock outside its group. A master pin has cracked or fallen into the wrong chamber, creating an unintended shear line. In Washington’s older apartment buildings near Courthouse Hill, we see this most often in Biaxial systems that were last pinned fifteen years ago.
- Key requires jiggling or heavy torque to turn. The sidebar is binding against worn sidebar code grooves, or the bottom pins have developed flat spots from years of use. Medeco’s sidebar system depends on exact depth and rotation, wear throws off both.
- New key duplicates won’t operate the lock. The original key was cut to worn pin chambers, so fresh copies match the worn state rather than the factory specification. A full repin to original depths, not just more copies, fixes this.
- Lock was rekeyed recently and now the master key doesn’t work. The technician used standard pins instead of Medeco’s proprietary angled pins, or failed to account for the master key system’s hierarchy. This is common when a general locksmith tackles Medeco without the right pinning kit.
