Sargent Car Key Cutting in Washington, WA | Strongbox Lock & Safe Co. of Washington

Sargent Car Key Cutting: The Washington Owner’s Guide

We stock and cut Sargent-compatible automotive keys for most passenger vehicles on the road in Washington, with typical installed pricing from $95 to $185 depending on transponder or smart-key programming needs. Same-day service is standard for most models we see around town. Most Washington owners figure out something’s wrong when their key starts catching in the ignition, won’t turn smoothly, or the fob buttons quit working in the grocery store parking lot on a rainy Tuesday.

Which Sargent Models This Applies To

Sargent built automotive key blanks under several series over the decades, and the right blank depends on your vehicle’s keyway profile, not just the Sargent name stamped on the head. The Sargent 6275 and 6276 blanks cover many domestic ignitions from the 1980s through early 2000s, while later transponder keys used the Sargent STR series with embedded chip pockets. If your key head has a small plastic grip with a Sargent logo, flip it over and look for a four-digit number - that’s your starting point.

We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Sargent. We carry both OEM Sargent blanks and Ilco aftermarket equivalents that meet the same ANSI specs. For most Washington drivers, the Ilco version holds up fine and costs less. The exception is late-model vehicles with encrypted transponders, where the OEM blank sometimes programs more reliably with the vehicle’s immobilizer. Dennis Wakefield keeps that old Ilco guide on his workbench for a reason - matching the blank to the lock is still half the job.

Signs Your Sargent Car Key Cutting Is Failing

  • Key catches or sticks in the ignition. The blade edges have worn down from years of metal-on-metal contact, or the cuts were never quite deep enough to begin with. Either way, the pins aren’t lifting to the shear line cleanly anymore.
  • Key turns but engine won’t crank. On transponder models, the chip inside the key head may have failed or lost its programming sync with the immobilizer. The mechanical cut works fine; the electronic handshake doesn’t.
  • Remote buttons work intermittently. The circuit board in the fob is taking a beating from temperature swings - Washington’s humid summers and freezing winters crack solder joints faster than drier climates.
  • Key wobbles excessively in the lock. The blade has worn narrower than spec, or someone used it to pry open a package and bent it slightly. Either way, it’s not engaging the tumblers squarely.
  • You need to jiggle or wiggle to get it to turn. This usually means the cuts are worn shallow in the high-use positions, or debris has packed into the keyway. Sometimes both.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range
Standard mechanical key cut (no chip) $95 - $125
Transponder key cut + programming $145 - $185
Smart key / proximity fob replacement $165 - $285
Emergency lockout + key cut (after hours) $175 - $245

What drives the range? Chip complexity mostly. A plain brass key takes ten minutes. A proximity fob with encrypted rolling-code programming takes diagnostic time and specialized equipment. We quote the price before the truck moves. That’s just how this should work. Every key we cut carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise - backed in writing, no arguing, no extra paperwork.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s not much dangerous about a car key, but there is plenty that goes wrong when owners guess. You can safely check whether your key number is visible, whether the battery in your fob is dead, and whether a spare key works better. What you should not do: file your own key, force a stuck key with pliers, or buy an uncut blank online hoping to match it yourself. A mis-cut blank wastes money and can damage your ignition wafers. Programming a transponder without the right equipment often locks up the immobilizer, and then you’re towing it. We’ve fixed both mistakes in Washington driveways more times than we can count. Call (888) 545-8474 and we’ll tell you exactly what you need before we head out.
